Beginning Joomla is an excellent choice if you are a website owner or a developer interested in Joomla. It covers primarily Joomla 1.5 but it also has some good references to Joomla 1.0 and the differences between the two.
Since its publication a few concepts and a lot of the coding have changed, but that's not a big issue if you learn to refer to Joomla.org for your specific information. For a more general overview of what Joomla and CMS are you will get your money worth.
My main gripe with the book is not so much the outdated code (I can get the fresh code anytime I want) but with the choices he made for the example installation. Yes: GoDaddy.com is possibly the most popular host out there and their domain name service is second to none, but you'd have to be a masochist to use it for hosting your Joomla website. This is true of most other "BIG NAMES" like yahoo.com, 1&1, Network Solutions, etc.
These services simply do not have the properly trained staff and the philosophy necessary to support the open source community and Joomla specifically. So very often, when I had my site hosted on GoDaddy, the support folks would blame any gripe I would have on the fact I used "a php script". Their suggestion often was to "reduce the number of PHP scripts on the server. Something that if you have even read 2 posts on the Joomla.org forum you know it's impossible.
Beside the poor choice of hosting, this book is usually my first choice when I have to suggest an all purpose book to a client that needs to get up to speed on Joomla.
