You are working in MS Word 2007 (and apparently in other versions as well) and suddently you cannot use your mouse inside the document. It's like the page turned into an image.

This has happened to me several times now and each time I have had to research the fix. Now I am posting it here so if nothing else I no longer have to look for it everywhere. Hopefully it will help others as well.

This is how to fix the issue:

  1. Exit all Office programs
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK
  3. Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:
  • Word 2002: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Office\10.0\Word\Data
  • Word 2003: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Office\11.0\Word\Data
  • Word 2007: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Office\12.0\Word\Data
  1. Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu
  2. Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop
  3. Click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes
  4. Exit Registry Editor
  5. Start Word.

If this doesn't fix the problem, you can restore the backup of the key by usually just double-clicking on the key.

I just had the annoying 'mouse doesn't work on word' this morning when i wanted to continue my assignment. No matter what i did ( as in reboot my laptop or scan the program file) nothing worked.
Thanks for sharing this method, smilies/cheesy.gif it's back to normal now.
