Change Joomla 1.5.x article date format

By default Joomla 1.5.x displays the article date next to the byline in this format:

Sunday, 07 June 2009 22:32

Most people do not like this format. I would argue that most authors and most readers would not want/care about the time the article was written.

Fortunately, the fix is very easy (but it requires you to have FTP or Cpanel access to your files) and it can be changed in a matter of a few minutes.

  1. Go to your local or remote Joomla files and navigate to:
    /language/en-GB/en-GB.ini
  2. Open the file and look around line:11 for this string:
    DATE_FORMAT_LC2=%A, %d %B %Y %H:%M
  3. Now, I think this is pretty self explanatory but what you need to do is delete the %H:%M part of the string and the byline time will disappear.
  4. However, since I usually don't like destructive changes, especially in the core files, you may want to copy and paste the line right back below the original and then comment out the old line with a # sign, like this:
    #DATE_FORMAT_LC2=%A, %d %B %Y %H:%M
  5. This will allow you to revert back anytime you need it or to at least refer to the original.
  6. In addition, if you would like to customize the date further, refer to this page in the PHP manual

In Joomla 1.0.x the method is similar but the languages files are in a php file, not an .ini file. Still look under language and do a search for "date" it should  bring back the lines where you'll find a very similar formatting you can edit.

Good luck and I hope this article has helped some.

Update: I found this extension: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/5341/details
Supposedly it allows for administration based customization of a US based Joomla web site. I'll be testing and reviewing it in a future article or Podcast.

Not PHP, Unix
Hi,
I know this is an old post but...
Thanks for your article but the link is a bit misleading. These are standard Unix time codes, not PHP. The actual link is http://linux.about.com/od/comm...1_date.htm.smilies/wink.gif
Why do I have to change a language config file to change my date format? Weird.
