Bilingual and Multilingual Websites

We at ContiCreative speak at least three languages fluently, English (naturally), Italian and Spanish. However, we are also familiar with most languages based on the Western Alphabet and we have some experience with Right-to-Left languages like Arabic or Farsi. 

When working in those languages, or any language we may need software translation to understand, we will need our client to provide us with some guidance. We can also hire a language specialist from our partners, but that obviously will have result in additional charges.

How does a Multilanguage website work

The major difference between a regular, single language website and a multilingual one is the "Translation Window".

In a regular CMS, creating a new article is a simple as writing in an online text editor, filling out Title and other information and assigning the article to a category. Additionally, a website will have UI elements such as menus, footers and otehr "static" content that will need to be translated.

Articles are easily managed with a "translate" button in the editing window. The editor simply saves the document and clicks on the "translate" button and they'll see a split window with their original text above an empty text editor. The editor can then trnslate or directly paste an existing translation of the document in that window and save. 

For UI elements, there is a slightly different central area where menu links are translated.

Multilingual websites can also have different navigation structures for each language, meaning that some articles will exist in one language and not the other.

Multilingual websites are certainly more work to maintain, but they open your business to a vastly larger audience.
